Court Jails Man Who Steals Employer’s Car 16 Days After Engagement

A Lagos State Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Igbosere has convicted and sentenced a 30 year-old driver, Bob Badamosi, who stole his employer’s car, 16 days after he was employed, to one year imprisonment.

The stolen car, a Honda Accord car, with registration number APP788EA and chasing no. IHCP 26838A809355, was valued at N2.6 million.

Magistrate A. A. Runsewe, convicted and sentenced the car thief to twelve months imprisonment, after he pleaded guilty to a one count charge of stealing, brought against him by the Police.

Before the verdict was handed down, the Police prosecuting officer, Sergeant Tope Adegbite, had informed the court that Badamasi, who resides at 21, Moshalashi street, in Obalende, Ikoyi, Lagos, committed the offence on January 21, 2020.

Adegbite also claimed that the incident took place at the Nigerian Stock Exchange building in Marina, Lagos Island.

The prosecutor further informed the court that the Honda Accord car stolen by Badamasi belongs to one Lukman Adekola.

He said that the offence committed by the convict is contrary to and punishable under Section 287 (7), (10), of the criminal law of Lagos state 2015.

While reviewing the facts of the case, Adegbite told the court that the convict was employed on January 6, 2020, by the complainant, and he stole the car on 21, of January 2020.

Adegbite, said “Badamasi, after dropping the complainant at the Nigerian Stock Exchange building, on 21 of January, drove off the car to Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, where he intended to sell it off.”

“The convict while in Port Harcourt, parked the car in an Estate for two days, and then went there on the third day, with a buyer, who later left him without buying the car.

“While he was standing alone with the car, the police men who were watching him, asked him for the owner of the car and he told them the car belongs to his boss.

“Upon further probing about the whereabout of his boss, and he told them that his boss was in Lagos, that was how he was apprehended,” the prosecutor narrated.

At the conclusion of reviewing the facts of the case, the prosecutor urged the court to convict and sentence the car thief as prescribed by the law.

However, the convict urged the court to tamper justice with mercy and vowed not to engage in the act again if given a second chance.

After listening to the facts of the case, and the convict’s mercy’s plea, Magistrate Runsewe, sentenced him to 12 months imprisonment.
