Four Die, Scores Hospitalised As Cholera Outbreak Hits Ogun 

Four persons have reportedly died while scores have been hospitalised as a result of a cholera outbreak that hit some parts of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

Our correspondent exclusively gathered that the outbreak hit Abule-Otun, Lafenwa, Kuto, Idi-Aba, and Oke-Ijeun.

It was gathered that a woman and her child were the first casualties of the outbreak.

They were reportedly rushed to a private hospital which later referred them to the state hospital.

Further findings showed that the cholera outbreak had started since November 4 and claimed the life of a woman at Abule-Otun, Lafenwa, while her child was hospitalised.

Some other people were reported to have lost their lives due to the outbreak.

When our Correspondent visited Abule-Otun, Isale-Odo, where the outbreak started, it was gathered that many residents have also been affected.

One of the residents, Adeola Adeniyi, told our correspondent that some residents were stooling and vomiting in the community.

He said some of them have been taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, while others were taken to the state hospital.

Our correspondent observed that most houses in the area have no toilet facilities.

It was further observed that the community has no proper drainage system.

It was also observed that  the major sources of water in the area  are privately dug wells within the community.

Confirming the incident, the Chief Press Secretary to the state governor, Kunle Somorin, said the outbreak had killed four persons.

He said,  “We are on top of the unfortunate outbreak.

“Our epidemiologists are on the ground. Doctors, nurses  and other categories have been drafted to contain it. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of  Health, Dr Ayinde, is there now. He confirmed four  dead.”
