Chimamanda: Medical Panel Suspends 3 Euracare Doctors For Negligence

The Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel has suspended three doctors at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, including the Medical Director, Dr Tunde Majekodunmi, for negligence in the treatment of 21-month-old Nkanu Adichie-Esege.

Additionally, the panel suspended the hospital’s anesthesiologist, Dr Titus Ogundare, and the Chief Medical Officer at Atlantis Paediatric Hospital, Dr Atinuke Uwajeh, after finding sufficient evidence of medical negligence against them.

Nkanu, the son of renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie and Dr Ivara Esege, died on January 7, 2026, following treatment at Atlantis Hospital and procedures at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lagos.

The panel stated that these doctors are barred from practising medicine in Nigeria until their cases are adjudicated by the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal.

This information was confirmed in a statement signed by the Secretary of the Investigation Panel, Dr Enejo Abdul.

The investigation concluded during its 25th session at Excel Hotel & Resort in Abuja on February 17-18, 2026.

The report also indicated a prima facie case of professional misconduct against ten other doctors: Dr Adeseye Akinsete, Dr Chidinma Ohagwu, Dr Anthony Ajeh, Dr Amarachi Bayo, Dr Nkechi Peji, Dr Olaoye Oludare, Dr Agaja Oyinkansola, Dr Patricia Akintan, Dr Babatunde Bamgboye, and Dr Raji Faidat.

While the panel cleared eight other doctors, it made its decisions after reviewing complaints, counter-affidavits, and sworn depositions from all 21 physicians involved.

Parents of Nkanu filed a petition with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, accusing the doctors of medical negligence and misconduct, claiming that Nkanu was initially admitted to Atlantis Hospital in Lagos for a mild illness that worsened.

They further stated that while arrangements were being made to transfer him to Johns Hopkins Hospital in the U.S., Atlantis Hospital referred him to Euracare for diagnostic tests, including an MRI, lumbar puncture, and central line insertion, all of which preceded his death.

The family alleges that negligence during these procedures contributed to his death.

In a legal notice dated January 10, 2026, led by Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), the family accused Euracare and its staff, including the anesthesiologist, of breaching their duty of care.

The child, born on March 25, 2024, was referred to Euracare on January 6, 2026, for diagnostic and preparatory procedures before an emergency evacuation to the U.S., where specialised care was reportedly available.

Procedures included an echocardiogram, brain MRI, peripheral central line insertion, lumbar puncture, and sedation with propofol.

The parents report that the child suddenly developed severe complications en route to the cardiac catheterisation lab after the MRI.
