Petition Calls on INEC to Verify Tinubu’s Educational Records

A fresh petition submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called for the reopening of an investigation into the educational qualifications presented by President Bola Tinubu to obtain clearance to contest the 2023 presidential election.

The petition, dated June 19, was filed by a civil society organisation, the Center for Reform and Public Advocacy (CFRPA), through a team of lawyers led by Mr Kalu Agu.

The group is seeking clarification from INEC on the authenticity of the Chicago State University certificate submitted by President Tinubu in his election documents.

The petitioners alleged that President Tinubu’s claim of attending Government College Lagos from 1960 to 1970 was questionable, stating that the school was reportedly established in 1974.

They further raised concerns that the primary and secondary school certificates presented by the President, which were said to have supported his admission to Chicago State University, may require verification.

The group urged the INEC Chairman, who is a Professor of Law and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), to use his experience to address the ongoing controversy surrounding President Tinubu’s eligibility ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

According to CFRPA, clarification from INEC is necessary due to the constitutional implications of submitting forged documents, referencing relevant provisions of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

The petitioners also warned that they may take legal action against INEC if the commission fails to provide clarification on the matter.

The group described itself as a non-profit, pro-democracy, human rights, anti-corruption, and public interest organisation, adding that it was bringing the matter before INEC in line with its objectives.

The petition referenced a 2023 US court proceeding involving a request by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for President Tinubu’s academic records from Chicago State University, claiming that the released documents raised further questions requiring clarification.
