Court grants El-Rufai N100m bail over alleged interception of Ribadu’s calls

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to Nasir El-Rufai in the sum of N100 million over allegations that he unlawfully intercepted the phone communications of Nuhu Ribadu.

Delivering the ruling, Justice Abdulmalik ordered the former Kaduna State governor to provide one surety who must be a federal civil servant of at least Grade Level 17 and resident in either Maitama or Asokoro in Abuja.

The court also directed the surety to submit the original Certificate of Occupancy of a landed property worth no less than the bail amount, along with proof of salary for at least three months, verified by a bank manager within the court’s jurisdiction.

Other bail conditions include the submission of an affidavit of means, a recent passport photograph, tax clearance for the last six months, and a verification letter from the surety’s department.

Justice Abdulmalik further ordered El-Rufai to surrender his international passport and barred him from travelling outside the country without the court’s approval. He was also directed to report to the headquarters of the Department of State Services every last Friday of the month by 10 a.m. until the case is concluded.

The judge warned that any breach of the bail conditions would result in the automatic revocation of the bail.

The case, marked FHC/ABJ/99/2026, stems from allegations that El-Rufai admitted during an interview on Arise News that he worked with others to unlawfully intercept the National Security Adviser’s communications unlawfullys, insisting that “a casual remark made during a television programme cannot be construed as a judicial confession.”
