Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez has defended his decision to leave Cristiano Ronaldo on the pitch throughout Wednesday’s 1-1 draw against DR Congo, despite criticism over the veteran striker’s performance.
Portugal struggled to find their rhythm in Houston as they opened their 2026 World Cup campaign with a disappointing draw.
Ronaldo’s quiet outing attracted criticism from fans and pundits, with some questioning whether the 41-year-old’s presence was affecting the team’s attacking flow.

However, Martínez backed his captain, insisting Ronaldo’s goalscoring ability and experience remain vital.
“It made no sense at all to take off Cristiano Ronaldo, who is the best goalscorer in history, off the field when we were looking for goals,” Martínez said.
With pressure building in the group stage, Martínez and Ronaldo will be hoping for a stronger performance when Portugal face Uzbekistan in their next match.
