Lagos Arraigns NURTW Chieftain Over Alleged Death Of Dispatch Rider

The Lagos State government on Wednesday arraigned a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Shamsudeen Oladiti, popularly known as “Shamelon,” before the state high court in Igbosere over the alleged death of a dispatch motorcycle rider, Ramon Imam.

The 55-year-old Oladiti was docked before Justice Olawale Alebiosu on a three-count charge of involuntary manslaughter, conspiracy and attempted murder.

The prosecutor, Jubril Kareem, informed the judge that the offences were allegedly committed between August 27 and September 17, 2025, at Lewis Street, Lagos Island.

Kareem also claimed that the defendant and others still at large at about 3pm on the same day, caused the death of Imam by allegedly beating him with fist blows and repeatedly striking him on the head and face.

He also told the court that on August 27, 2025, at about 10am, the defendant allegedly attempted to murder one Samuel Omale by beating him with fist blows, causing him severe injuries at the same location.

The prosecutor further maintained that the alleged offences violated sections 224, 411 and 230 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Based on his plea, the defence counsel, Olanrewaju Ajanaku, informed the court of a bail application dated April 27, 2026.

Ajanaku informed the court that the application was served on the prosecution, and they have acknowledged service.

“May we humbly place the application for bail before the court. Same has been served,d and my learned friend has confirmed service,” he said.

Responding, Kareem confirmed receipt of the application and stated that the prosecution had no objection.

He, however, noted that the defence was also seeking an order directing the correctional centre to confirm the medical status of the defendant.

Ajanaku subsequently urged the court to grant the request for the defendant’s medical evaluation at a Lagos State government hospital.

In a short ruling, Justice Alebiosu granted the application and directed the Controller of Corrections at Kirikiri Correctional Centre to confirm the defendant’s medical status at a Lagos State government hospital.

The matter was then adjourned till June 15 for trial.
