Unity, Security Top My Agenda for Nigeria — Obi

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has declared that rebuilding national unity and ensuring security would be his top priorities if elected President.

Speaking after completing the party’s screening process, Obi said Nigeria can only progress when citizens feel safe and included, stressing that mothers should no longer fear for the safety of their children.

According to him, achieving that vision begins with uniting the country and strictly adhering to the Nigerian Constitution, especially its provisions on federal character and inclusivity.

“We want mothers to feel safe when their children go to school or work. We envision a Nigeria where people can travel freely without fear,” Obi said. “Many Nigerians sleep hungry and uncertain about tomorrow, and that must change.”

The former Anambra State governor also emphasised the need to tackle corruption, insisting that public resources must serve the people rather than enrich a few individuals.

“Politicians are too focused on the next election while citizens continue to suffer. That has to change,” he added.

Obi described the NDC screening process as a reflection of genuine democratic practice, explaining that the exercise was aimed at ensuring all candidates meet constitutional requirements and provide proper documentation.

On reports that he may emerge as the party’s sole candidate, Obi said no official decision had yet been communicated by the party leadership.

He also commended the screening committee chaired by former Ebonyi State Governor Sam Egwu for conducting what he described as a professional and transparent exercise, while praising the party leadership for upholding democratic values.
